Gas Prices Jump at the Amsterdam Open
Europe's benchmark natural gas prices jumped by 6% at Monday market opening in Amsterdam as oil prices rallied amid an escalation in the Middle East that threatens the recovery of energy flows.
A Benchmark Not Seen Since the Last Crisis
The front-month price at the Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF), the benchmark for Europe's gas trading, soared by 6% as of 7:50 a.m. Amsterdam time on Monday, to hit the highest level since the 2022-2023 crisis. At $97.31 (84.275 euros) per megawatt-hour (MWh), the price now exceeds the January 2023 levels.

The TTF functions as the reference price for most gas contracts across the European Union, meaning moves there ripple quickly into household energy bills, industrial input costs, and the broader inflation outlook for the currency bloc.

Middle East Tensions Remain a Persistent Risk Factor
Europe's gas market has remained sensitive to Middle East supply disruptions ever since the region lost the bulk of its pipeline gas from Russia, leaving it more reliant on seaborne LNG cargoes that often transit through or near the same shipping lanes affected by regional conflicts.
