Spot Prices Meet Derivatives Data

CoinMarketCap has acquired CoinGlass, the data platform that tracks leveraged trading across cryptocurrency exchanges. The companies did not disclose a purchase price. CoinMarketCap said CoinGlass will continue operating under its existing name, with its team, website, application, free tools, API and pricing remaining in place. The acquisition broadens a business best known for spot prices into the derivatives information traders use to assess risk and positioning.

CoinGlass measures open interest, funding rates, liquidations and options activity. Its coverage spans 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 instruments, according to the announcement. Those figures matter because a token's spot price alone can hide the amount of leverage behind a move. A rising asset accompanied by sharply increasing funding costs, for example, can tell a different story from a rise supported by less crowded positions.

Questions of Independence

For CoinMarketCap, the transaction creates an opportunity to bring those measures closer to the price pages millions of users already visit. It could also strengthen the company's professional data offering, provided users can compare figures across venues and understand how each metric is calculated. CoinGlass brings an established specialist audience as well as the infrastructure required to collect fast-moving information from derivatives markets.

CoinMarketCap has been owned by Binance since 2020, a relationship that can make data independence an important question for market participants. Both brands say CoinGlass will retain its existing service and commercial terms. The practical test will be whether the combined product improves visibility into leverage without disrupting the tools analysts and traders already depend on each day.
